We have watched as the UQ Union has abused due process and the principles of free and fair elections to maintain control by the incumbents.

No change to voting as women’s officer remains open to all students

A motion calling for the restriction of voting for the Women’s Officer position to the Women’s Collective was voted down by the Student Representative Council last week.

Moved by Michael Rosser and supported by Women’s Officer Amber Karanikolas, the motion would have required attendance at Collective meetings in return for voting rights.

Subway, Boost Juice for Campus, but Chancellery Backtracks on Food Affordability

FM Assist has confirmed a slate of new retailers on campus, including Subway and Boost Juice.

Previously, at the Student Leaders’ Morning Tea, attended by Chancellery officials, Vice-President of University,  ServicesNeil Morris promised cheaper and healthier options were to be written into all new retailing contracts.

“Voice” Wins Presidency in SRC Vote

Ross Willing has been elected President of the Student Representative Council (SRC) next year, with the “Voice” ticket securing 56% of the vote ahead of “Stand Up!”

“Voice” elected four of the seven delegates to the National Union of Students (NUS), with the remaining three places going to “Stand Up!”

SDC declines LifeChoice affiliation

The Student Development Committee (SDC) declined to affiliate controversial pro-life club LifeChoice last week, in a meet held in camera.

LifeChoice UNSW was forced to hold a second Inaugural Annual General Meeting after it originally failed to give adequate notification to the SDC.

Reprieve for Pharmacy Following Student Anti-Boycott

The Pharmacy at UNSW has confirmed that they are moving closer towards a final agreement with the University on a list detailing the sale of non-pharmaceutical products.

According to sources close to the negotiation, student support of the Pharmacy was crucial to securing favourable terms.

Islamic Society Condemns Hyde Park Protest

The Islamic Society on Campus (ISOC) distanced itself from violence-marred protests against an Islamophobic video earlier this week, signing a statement that was released by an umbrella body of Islamic associations in Australia in response to the protests.

A violent clash between police and Muslim protestors occurred in Sydney on the 15th of September, and a severe backlash forced Islamic groups to quell anger by condemning the actions of the protestors.

Welfare Policies Allowing Unnecessary Poverty

The Federal Government is being pushed to increase the rate of Newstart allowance following warnings that it is falling significantly behind the adequate minimum amount needed for the unemployed and low income earners to survive day to day.

The report prepared by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling for church welfare agencies has suggested that the Government has ignored advice since 2009 of the growing inequalities between Newstart and other government allowances and the recommendation that allowances be raised.

Student Leaders Bring Issues to Chancellery

Senior members of the chancellery team met student leaders last Friday, discussing issues affecting the student populace, including concerns over retail developments, the gym and course cuts.

Whilst Vice-Chancellor Fred Hilmer was in South America, students met with other officials including Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Richard Henry, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students) Wai Fong Chua, members of University Council and Academic Board.

New Anti-Abortion Club Creates Controversy on Campus

LifeChoice UNSW, a new anti-abortion club on campus, has been met with controversy following a bungled Inaugural General Meeting in late August.

LifeChoice UNSW is a pro-life society primarily interested in pushing an anti-abortion and anti-euthanasia agenda to “promote the dignity of human life from conception till natural death”.
