Australia’s international student peak body, the Council of International Students Australia (CISA) had its second annual National Conference in Brisbane earlier this month, meeting to discuss the difficulties facing international students, chiefly ensuring safety and security.
CISA was established in 2010 to give a unified voice to the undergraduate international student caucus. It now serves as a platform to lobby individual universities, as well state and federal governments, to increase benefits and protections.
Whilst Australia has historically been slow to take up carpooling, the concept appears to be re-entering the green debate, possibly in light of rising petrol prices, traffic congestion, and the obvious environmental and health effects due to carbon emissions and degradation of air quality.
“People are starting to face up to reality – this culture of sole occupant vehicle is going to have to change one way or the other,” Peter Harper, founder of sydneycarpools.com said.
